Binaural Beats and Their Ability to Help Us Sleep Better

It’s 3 AM, and you are cuddled up in your bed enjoying the most restful sleep possible, you deserve it after working so hard this week when suddenly you hear a noise from your kitchen that wakes you out of your sleep. As your heart races a mile a minute you soon realize it was just the ice machine a sigh of relief floods over you, and you try to cozy up to bed but nothing is working. You lie there watching the minutes and hours pass by on your alarm clock until it is time to go to work. One sound made such a negative impact on the quality of your sleep, how is that so? When we sleep, all responses to external influences are decreased; that's why many of us need a firm nudge to get out of bed in the morning!

Trouble Sleeping? Binaural Beats Can Help!

Throughout the night our auditory sensations remain heightened and active and most scientists believe that our bodies do this to protect ourselves during such a long rest period. So if you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep at night, covering your ears with pillows or turning your sleep machine louder might not be the only solution.

Studies have shown that poor sleep quality can lead to negative health effects and poor mood. Still, new research concerning delta-level binaural beats states that these beats have the ability to increase sleep quality overall. But first, let us learn more about binaural beats, brain waves, and their effect on the brain:

There are four types of brain waves that we circulate through during the day and night. Each one has a corresponding effect on the brain and body.

  • Beta waves (13-16 Hz) occur when we are awake and alert.

  • Alpha waves (8-12 Hz) happen during deep relaxation such as meditation or prayer.

  • Theta waves (4-7 Hz) are common in lighter sleep stages or falling asleep

  • Delta waves (0.5-4 Hz) signify deep sleep.

Binaural beats are essentially an auditory illusion, where two slightly different tones are played in each ear (preferably through headphones). The brain in turn believes that it is hearing a different tone whose frequency is equal to the difference between the two tones.  When these two tones are within a low range (delta and theta waves) they aid in mood, relaxation, and deep sleep. Studies have also shown that binaural beats are a low-cost option for individuals with insomnia and sleep issues.

Christian sleep casts provide relaxing prayers accompanied by low-frequency delta wave binaural beats for added relaxation and deep sleep. These two factors play an important role in getting a good night's rest. Luminous Meditation offers sleep meditations that can help you get a restful sleep while also resting on God’s word.
