Unlocking Inner Peace: A Guide to Christian Meditation and Mindfulness

Updated: Jul 20, 2024

In short, Christian meditation is a practice that allows you to become more aware of your inner self through prayer and reflection on God’s word.

As believers in Christ, we know that there is more to us than flesh and blood, the Apostle Paul states in the book of Romans that to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” Romans 8:6 KJV

If we read Romans 8, we can learn that as Christians, we must strengthen ourselves spiritually by the word of God to live peacefully in this world of sin. Meditation is a tool we can use as Christians to aid in our spiritual journey with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that is healing, forgiving, and uplifting to our inner self.

Meditating on God’s word takes an open mind and a willing spirit as it combines prayer, breath work, and reflection on God’s word. Prayer can be further examined as a time for self-reflection and evaluation and humbly asking God to heal or mend any brokenness within. David repeatedly speaks on this in the book of Psalms where you will find the word meditation mentioned many times throughout. David gives us a glimpse into what it means to meditate on God's word by pondering on God's goodness and thinking thoroughly about his walk with Christ.

"My meditation of him shall be sweet:

I will be glad in the LORD." Psalm 104:34 KJV

As believers, God and Christ instruct us to meditate or think on his Holy word, daily. Philippians 4:8 speaks on the subject of meditation.

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

As Christians, we know that God and Christ are pure and Holy. So, setting aside time in your day to meditate is a great way to deepen your connection with Christ and gain a closer walk with Christ. In life, you will be faced with many challenges, and you will need to navigate some negative situations. Although negative things may be happening around you, the scriptures tell us not to focus or ruminate on them.

Cultivating a daily habit of meditation can be difficult, especially if you have a hectic schedule Mindfulness requires a small amount of time out of your day that is committed to the betterment of yourself whether that be on an emotional, physical, or spiritual level.
